Safety on and around the railway

On behalf of ProRail and railAlert, YIM developed a digital solution to replace the error and fraud-prone paper safety passport.

The railAlert Foundation promotes the occupational safety of everyone working on the Dutch railway and manages the rail infrastructure in the Netherlands. RailAlert works closely with various stakeholders, including ProRail, to ensure safety on and around the railway. On behalf of ProRail and railAlert, YIM developed a digital solution to replace the error and fraud-prone paper safety passport. Contractors, subcontractors, and executors must be demonstrably legal and qualified to work around the railway.

The various verifications, validations, and systems are integrated into one comprehensive system. Based on the Agile Scrum methodology, this concept was developed by multiple teams (interaction designers, designers, developers, architects, and scrum masters). The Digital Safety Passport (DVP) was born with three components: a portal, a physical pass, and a ScanApp.

Clear overview thanks to DVP

The portal gives employers and supervisors a clear overview of notifications, employees, violations, and reports. This overview is created by connecting with various companies’ systems and certifying institutions.

The portal gives employers and supervisors a clear overview of notifications, employees, violations, and reports. This overview is created by connecting with various companies’ systems and certifying institutions. The combination of the imported data determines whether a person receives a Digital Safety Passport.

When the combined data indicates that all requirements have been met, a pass is automatically printed and sent to the pass holder. This is possible by linking the portal to the Dataclient registration system and the pass production system of Nsecure. The portal also offers opportunities to track pass validity and gain insight into the pass production process or the number of people present at a location. Therefore, the portal is an indispensable tool for organizations that need to guarantee safety at locations.

On-site data control through innovative Scan App

In addition to the portal, YIM developed an innovative Scan App. RailAlert conducts inspections during work on and around the railway. By scanning the QR code on the pass of the executives, the supervisor sees all the data of the relevant person in the Scan App.

  • Data and access can be verified through the Scan App.
  • Attendance registration is kept, and violations are recorded.
  • Errors and fraud are reduced, thereby increasing safety at a location.
  • The ScanApp is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and works offline.

Results from using the Digital Safety Passport

As a result of the introduction of the Digital Safety Passport, safety around the railway has increased. Safety is an essential objective of railAlert. Other objectives railAlert linked to the project were met and exceeded due to our efficient collaboration!

DVP received the Dutch Interactive Award 2015 in the B2B & Professional Services category.
